About Us

People of Obohia regionThe community of Obohia is located on the North Western corner of Mbaise. It forms part of the area of Igboland which has a very high population density of not less than four hundred persons per square kilometer, or over one thousand persons per square mile. According to Mazi Amam Acholonu, a “son of the soil”, Obohia occupies an area of approximately 16.32 sq. km. (10.2 sq. miles) based on his geographical research in 1974.

Obohia boasts of a unique landscape within an environment of a fertile agricultural crescent, which attracted colonial administrators to build a Divisional Officer’s Rest House in it. It was these colonial masters who put Obohia on the earliest map of Owerri Division. Obohia was also considered as a suitable alternative location of the Divisional headquarters, alongside Owerri.

Historically, Obohia occupies a prominent position in the culture of Ndi Igbo. If you google the name Obohia, you will come across Eyiri Eyi Obohia, the internationally renowned culture. An Igbo-English dictionary written by G.U. Ukairo, derives the interpretation of August break from the short spell of dry weather in August when Eyiri Eyi is celebrated. Most people in Igboland call it “Okochi Eyiri Eyi”.

Today, Obohia struggles to maintain its traditional village structure in 17 kindred and their order of seniority, despite intrusions from external political factors like creation of autonomous communities. Obohia had a single traditional ruler for the entire community before the emergence of separate traditional rulers for different villages. The possibility of more autonomous communities cannot be ruled out. However, a majority of people is determined to maintain an underlying unity within the entire Obohia Community.

ObohiaDev.org was conceived to be an instrument for the desired unity and progress. It is envisioned to provide and encourage the existence of a forum for learning, discussion and analysis of current issues and ideas that affect Obohia rather than people dwelling in ignorance and negative prejudice that may influence the trend and direction of development and general progress of Obohia.
